No one wants to deal with the discomfort and irritation that comes with a bed bug infestation. While signs of this can be hard to identify at first, there are ways you can determine whether or not it’s time to call a pest control company. Here are seven signs you have bed bugs in your home.
Itchy Red Bites
It’s unlikely that you’d think you have bed bugs if you don’t experience any of the symptoms that accompany it. It’s when the red, itchy bite marks start appearing that you realize you might have a problem. Specifically, signs of flat, red welts in small clusters or a zigzag pattern are the typical warning signs. Even though bed bugs don’t carry or spread disease through biting people, the bites they leave behind are itchy and irritating.
Uncomfortable Nights
Unfortunately, bed bugs tend to be more active at night, which will result in an uncomfortable night’s sleep if there are bed bugs in your bed. If you find that you’re particularly itchy during the night when lying down, bed bugs are likely the cause of it.
Marks on Exposed Skin
As bed bugs like to feed off of exposed skin, leaving bloody spots on the bed, this will be a clear sign that you’ve got a bed bug infestation. As your arms, shoulders, feet, and ankles are typically exposed when you’re sleeping, you’re likely to find marks on those areas.
There’s a Smell
Another common sign that you have bed bugs is the strong scent of a musty odour constantly present. This is due to the bed bugs releasing pheromones that can be very strong in large numbers. If a hotel room or other temporary location emits this odour as well, then pack your things before they become infested.
Inspect Your Bed
You’ll need to do more than just look at your bed sheets for signs of bed bugs. Strip down to the mattress and box spring, inspecting all corners and seams. Use a flashlight and magnifying glass if you have to. If you see any reddish-brown staining and/or brown ovals scattered about, then you’ve got bed bugs.
Inspect the Room
Once you’re done searching your bedding, it’s time to move onto the rest of your room. Check any other upholstery items, including chairs, couches, and curtains, for any signs of the pests. Don’t forget to check underneath and behind furniture pieces as well, looking for any reddish-brown spotting.
Check Your Clothes
Bed bugs like to cling to your clothes, which is another way they can reach your skin and leave you covered in bites. It’s also how they travel and spread to other areas and people so effectively. If you suspect you have bed bugs, look in your closet and thoroughly check your clothing.
