It’s a nightmare that we all hope to avoid; the realization that we’re sharing our home unwillingly with more than family members. Maybe you’re not even sure what, exactly, has made an invasion? Here are some clues that you’re playing host to some unwanted guests;
Spot A Potential Pest Infestation
- Check for the pests themselves; you might think this is an obvious one, but many people see other signs and don’t think they’ll spot the little critter itself. Look in cupboard corners and underneath objects (clutter makes a great hiding place). Some pests are more obvious; ants, for example, have no problem traipsing across the floor right before your eyes. (And usually leading you right back to their nest)
- Droppings are a sign that there is something lurking in your home. Do some research to figure out what pest is making the droppings – the internet is a wonderful resource and can provide pictures for comparison.
- Nests; rats and mice will both make nests and this is a sign they’re holing up and probably breeding. You may also spot wasp nests from higher locations.
- If you can’t identify a smell, it could be coming from a pest. Mice, rats, bed bugs and roaches, among others, all create their own unsavoury signature scent.
- Gnawed wood, food bags or boxes, cupboards, or signs of boring in the walls and baseboards are all signs of pests.
Some homes are more susceptible to pest infestations than others. This could be due to the natural features of the neighbourhood, a disturbance in the area (new buildings destroying pest homes and sending them seeking another), the location and housing of your garbage and compost, and the general state of your home cleanliness. There are some preventative measures you can take to reduce the likelihood that pests will take up residence.
Steps to Prevent Pests to Take of Residence
- Keep garbage and compost in as secure bins as possible to reduce the ease with which pests can access their free dinner.
- Keep your home tidy, reduce clutter, and keep food items properly stored. Dispose of overripe fruit (especially fruit that might sit out on a counter) in a timely manner.
- Take regular walks through your yard and take notice of signs of pests (ant hills, for example, or any signs of destruction of house exterior)
- Check your deck for signs of gnawing or boredom. You’ll also want to check for signs of sawdust – the damage might be hidden from sight but if termites are eating away at your deck you’ll see it on the ground.
There are always sneaky critters that might evade your attempts to catch or even notice their presence in the first place.
